Ghana’s finest boxer to ever do it, Prof. Azuma Nelson has revealed that as an amateur boxer, Chairman Rawlings approached and told him that he could beat an Olympic champion who at the time became a stumbling block to Ghana’s chances of winning Silver at the Olympic Games.
The former WBC featherweight holder told Citi Sports that the PNDC chairman would come early to sweep before they arrived.
He added that even if they offered to help, he declined, saying they should focus on the training so that they beat that Olympics champion.
He continued to say that the first president of the 4th republic would go and buy Beans (boiled beans, served with hot pepper and oil) for them after he finished sweeping.
It was Papa J’s own way of motivating the amateur boxers to go and do well at the Olympics Games.
The young Azuma Nelson did not disappoint, he beat this very champion Jerry John Rawlings instructed him to and brought the silver home.
The late president was an examplary and great inspiration to many.
The founder of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) passed on November 12 , 2020 and friends, mates and presidents over the world have been sending their tributes and words of condolence to the family.
