The Covid-19 pandemic has had a toll on everybody but how it has affected Kumasi Asante Kotoko is mind-blowing.
Kumasi Asante Kotoko hosted Al Hilal Omdurman of Sudan and were beaten a goal to nothing.
The Porcupine warriors were expecting to overtune things in their second leg of the two-leg fixture to go pass the Sudaness into the next stage.
Unfortunately, that dream could not not near a realization as the game was called off due to covid-19.
The Confederation of African Football( CAF) had directed, as part of the numerous Covid-19 protocols that every player and staff member be tested before a game is played.
Upon releasing the test results, it came out that 7 Kotoko players with one outanding making a total of 8 players were positive and thus could not feature for the game.
With a 22- man squad sent to Sudan, Kotoko was left with only 14 players.
This sharply contravenes CAF’s rules and regulations of having a minimum of 16 players for a match.
That is, 11 outfield players plus the goal keeper in polls and 4 substitutes.
The law further States that failure on the part of any team to provide the required number of players will mean an automatic 2: 0 win to their opponents.
This means that Al- Hilal Omdurman of Sudan has qualified to the next stage with an agregate of 3:0, having already beaten Kotoko in their Backyard 1:0.
Asante Kotoko however, suspected the results had been tempered with and has filed a protest through the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to CAF.
But CAF blatantly ignored and allowed the Sudanese based club go through to the next stage.
The Porcupine Warriors, as a result have been knocked out of the CAF Champions League and will now be banging their hopes on the qualifying and playing in the CAF Confederation Cup.
It is such a sad story and it’s unfortunate Kumasi Asante Kotoko has to be victims of such bizarre circumstances.
