Charles Komla Akonnor was sacked on Monday 13th September, 2021 for what the Ghana Football Association (GFA) referred to as ‘a poor run of games’.
C.K Akonnor was sacked after abysmal performances in the Ethiopia and South Africa games which saw the senior national team settle for just a goal in 180 minutes.
The GFA on Monday issued a communique announcing the termination of the agreement between them and the coach.
Reacting to the news, ace journalist George Opare Addo Jr has come out with some happenings that occasioned the coach.
Ghana Football Association never wanted to appoint C.K Akonnor because they didn’t think he merited the position.
The former minister of Youths and Sports, Hon. Isaac Asiamah however lobbied on his behalf and convinced the presidency to get him the job.
Face-off with Kurt
C. K Akonnor and the president of the GFA never had the best of relationships ever since his appointment as the head coach of the Black Stars. Kurt internationally interfered as he always replaced players he personal called up for games.
In fact, there were players that that were called for C. K Akonnor that he had little or no knowledge of. Lots of them were smuggled by the GFA through the Technical Director.
C. K Akonnor, GNPC and Non-payment of Salary
C. K Akonnor’s unpaid salaries might after all not be as a result of unavailability of money but a conscious effort to frustrate him.
As reported by by Muftawu Nabila Abdulai and posted by George Opare Addo Jr, when the GFA finally decided to accept C.K Akonnor, they pushed so that he could get the same salary as the immediate past coach, Kwesi Appiah.
The state institution in charge of the payment, GNPC however felt he did not merit the salary. Even when they eventually settled on $25k, they salaries have not come since he assumed post.
